When Ana, a wry Sylvia Plath scholar, starts work on her dissertation, the writing process takes her on a detour into the dark edges of her own life. Surrounded by the well-meaning but unsympathetic voices of her accountant husband and newly-in-love best friend, she falls deeper into isolation and loses a grip on her work—and reality. Combining the realism of life in NYC, the poeticism of otherworldly dreams, and a healthy dose of humor, Lotus in the Fire explores depression and suicide from a modern, feminist, and East-West philosophical lens, and creates a world that illuminates the polarities of beauty and pain, in literature and in life.
