Noises Off

By Michael Frayn

Noises Off is a masterfully crafted comedy that takes you on a wild ride behind the scenes of a theatre company’s disastrous production of a farce called Nothing On. As the eccentric cast navigates forgotten lines, misplaced props, and personal feuds, their performances become increasingly chaotic, with doors slamming shut at the wrong moments, sardines going missing, and romantic entanglements causing tension. Featuring witty dialogue and side-splitting physical comedy, Noises Off is a must-see theatrical treat that has been called “the funniest farce ever written” (New York Post).

“The most dexterously realized comedy ever about putting on a comedy. A spectacularly funny, peerless backstage farce. This dizzy, well-known romp is festival of delirium.” The New York Times

“The funniest farce ever written! Never before has side-splitting taken on a meaning dangerously close to the non-metaphorically medical.” The New York Post

Noises Off first premiered in February 1982 at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith, London. It was directed by Michael Blakemore and initially received excellent reviews, leading to a transfer to the Savoy Theatre in the West End, where it ran until 1987.

San Francisco Playhouse's auditorium is on two levels: Orchestra and Mezzanine/Balcony. Our intimate 199-seat theatre has only nine rows in the Orchestra, meaning every single seat is close to the stage.
